PRINTING

Whether you're an established artist wanting to sell print editions of your work, a fine art photographer looking to make exhibition-ready prints, a creative person thinking about giving a print as a gift or you simply want a new family photo for the wall, we welcome each and EVERY request that comes our way.

Using only the best hardware available, we produce extremely accurate reproductions on our in-house Canon imagePROGRAF inkjet printer. The printer uses 12-Cartridge Lucia Ex Ink System to produce beautifully-vivid, highly stable prints with an exceptional colour range and depth. The 12-Color LUCIA EX pigment inks are lightfast for up to 75 years, giving you a long time to enjoy your prints.

As we almost always print using 24" (609.6mm) paper rolls, we can accommodate a wide range of sizes. The prices on the site are listed in the standardised 'A-size' system, purely as a measure that everyone can understand, but it goes without saying that we are not fixed to those sizes and welcome anything you'd like to discuss.

ARTWORK DIGITISATION

Using a Canon 6D digital camera, along with Profoto flash heads, we are able to photograph your large-scale original artwork in the studio. Utilising the full-frame 20.2 megapixel sensor, the 6D generates huge files with maximum dimensions of 144.5 x 110.5 x 71.2 mm / 5.7 x 4.4 x 2.8 in. pixels (80.47 x 53.64cms) at 300dpi.

Artwork is photographed directly onto a laptop, meaning that between the camera screen, the laptop and the original work on the wall, the utmost care is taken to record the art to the highest level in-camera.

We then transfer the images onto a desktop Mac, coupled with an extremely accurate, self-calibrating Eizo monitor and very careful attention is given to colour balancing and adjusting the digital file whilst we have your work in the studio. This allows us to make sure we create prints that are as close to the original artwork as possible. The initial adjustments are made in the Capture One Pro editing software and any further cleaning up and colour work is then finessed in the latest version of Photoshop.

As we print on rolls, we make the most efficient use of the paper, being able to generate multiple prints on one large sheet which are then hand-trimmed to size.

As part of the digitisation process, we provide an A4 proof of your new print so you can check the colours and quality before any orders are placed. The final prints should be an incredibly close representation of the original piece, ready for you to sell to your happy customers.

FILM SCANNING

If somewhere in a box, a drawer, the loft or garage you have a stash of old negatives of fond memories, distant loved ones, lost relatives or when the children were little, we offer a one-stop-shop service to take your old film and turn memorable past moments into magnificent contemporary prints.

We cater for numerous film stocks and sizes, so if you have an old negative or transparency that you’ve often thought would be incredible to see made into a beautiful modern print, then we’d be very happy to share our knowledge and passion with you, to help you re-live those important life-moments, no matter what they may be!

At the basic level we will scan your negatives into a workable RAW format, which we would then save as a Tiff file to give back to you, should you wish to print them yourself. But if you’d rather let us do the work for you, we could then remove any existing dust and scratches on the film, balance the colours and density, if required, and then create a sublime new print for you in any size, up to A0, in colour or black and white.

Let us turn your past memories into printed magic, we're here to help you see those lost moments come back to life – to enjoy for another lifetime to come!

FAQS

What exactly is giclée printing?
'Giclée' is a French term meaning "to spray". It refers to the method of a high-end inkjet printer applying the ink to specialty papers at a resolution of 300dpi or greater. In order for the term to be fully true, the printers most commonly use pigment inks which are "archival", meaning that the colours are precise, "lightfast" and accurate for a long time to come.

Can you scan a printed photograph for me?
No, we don't have a flatbed scanner, we can only scan your negatives or transparencies as film, not a printed, paper photograph.

I have a large original artwork that I would like photographed and digitised, what is the maximum size you can accommodate?
We have a large open space in the studio, so if you can get it to us, we can photograph it for you, the scale of your work is not an issue.

How much do you charge for shipping?
Worldwide shipping depends on the destination and is calculated during checkout.

How will you package my prints for delivery?
We use acid-free tissue paper to package all our prints, ensuring the print surface is always protected in transit. For paper sizes A2, A1 and A0, we carefully hand-roll the prints and ship them in 2.5mm-thick, crush-resistant tubes, and for smaller sizes we use stiffened heavy duty cardboard envelopes.

How accurate are the colours on the prints compared to what I can see on the website?
We take care to accurately colour-match what you see on screen to the print output, but screen types differ slightly and not all will be calibrated. Obviously, print colours are slightly more vibrant in real life – we hope you'll be pleasantly surprised by this!

How do I know which paper stock to choose?
It really comes down to personal preference, and whether you want prints with a very subtle sheen, as with the semi-gloss, or very flat and without a reflective surface, as with the matt paper. Usually, prints with a lot of darker areas print better on semi-gloss paper and allow for more shadow detail, but both papers print most images beautifully. If you'd like us to suggest our preference, please ask.

Do your measurements refer to the paper or the image size?
The sizes refer to the width and height of the paper. The image size is always slightly less and we print the images in the centre of the paper, with a white border.

For framing purposes, what size are the borders around the images?
As photographs are of differing ratios, the borders on the right and left (for landscape images) vary. As a constant, we print both the top and bottom borders equally when printing landscape-oriented images, for portrait images, the left and right sides remain the same and are as follows:

A5 - 5mm
A4 - 15mm
A3 - 25mm
A2 - 35mm
A1 - 45mm
A0 - 55mm

How long will my print last for?
Under various different light sources, in display conditions, the pigment inks we use for our giclée prints are lightfast for up to 75 years.

Can I handle my prints easily?
Yes, if you're careful. We always advise handling 'naked' prints as little as possible prior to framing, but if you do, hold the print on the white border to minimise finger marks. The semi-gloss surface is more prone to showing greasy fingerprints, but the ink doesn't mark easily, while the matt surface doesn't show much in the white of the paper, but the ink can be very easily marked or scuffed.

Do you offer mounting and framing as an additional service?
Unfortunately not, but we can make some suggestions of local framers who can assist with this.
